“Title 42 Regulations” have been used since March 2020 to turn away refugees at the southern border. These regulations have been used to turn away virtually all refugees at the southern border without proper legal review based on unsubstantiated claims of poor health. Advocates and legal scholars have decried implementation of these regulations as a violation of human rights. This month, 164 religious organizations signed a strong letter to President Biden opposing these regulations and demanding their end. One hundred twenty five thousand refugees authorized for FY 2022. Each fiscal year, the president is empowered to authorize a number of refugees who may be admitted to the United States. In 2020, the last full year under former President Trump, the government set a target of 18,000 refugees and admitted fewer than 12,000. For FY 2022, President Biden will authorize 40,000 refugees from Africa; 35,000 from the Near East and South Asia; 15,000 from East Asia; 10,000 from Europe and Central Asia; and 15,000 from Latin America and the Caribbean.
