How to help refugees from Afghanistan. Catholic Charities Atlanta is actively engaged in resettling refugees from Afghanistan. Resettlement needs include financial contribution, donations of household items and volunteers. Get more information here. Religious worker application backlog. Religious workers from other countries can enter the United States through a program administered by the U.S. Customs and Immigration Service which allows them to minister in underserved communities and provide essential services to faith-based organizations and communities at large. Nonetheless, there is a tremendous backlog for approval of these applications. See the report and recommendations for this problem from Catholic Legal Immigration Network, Inc. (CLINIC).
Georgia General Assembly. The Georgia Catholic Conference continues to follow legislation affecting the common good and seek amendments in bills before the Georgia General Assembly.
SB ____ – Women’s Health & Safety Act to restrict chemical abortions as mentioned last week, is being reintroduced with modifications and a new SB number, which has not yet been revealed. This bill deserves our support.
HB 485 – While this bill remains in the Judiciary Committee, there is ongoing discussion of amendments that would limit imposition of the death penalty without fully repealing it.
HB 999 – would establish a “Promise Scholarship” which would allow $6,000.00 scholarship for qualified educational expenses to a student in a public school who withdraws from that school to attend a private school. Both the student and the qualifying school would be required to meet criteria set forth in the bill.
